The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) contributed to number of professors through the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Nugroho Sumarjiyanto Benedictus Maria, M.Si who is also a Lecturer in the Master of Economics Program. Inauguration was held on Thursday (29/09/2022), the professor in the field of Economics delivered a speech entitled “Economics and Corruption: Can Indonesia Be Free from Corruption?”
In his speech, Professor Nugroho explained an economic approach to analyze the causes, impacts, and prevention and eradication of corruption. This is motivated by the fact that corruption is an extraordinary crime that requires serious prevention and eradication. Serious efforts have been shown by the government. This is shown by the government’s efforts to establish the Corruption Eradication Commission which is an institution that specifically handles corruption and also by the existence of the Corruption Crime Act. On the other hand, these efforts have not shown maximum results, as indicated by two indicators, namely the high level of corruption in Indonesia and the large number of corruption cases handled by the KPK.
Prof. Nugroho said that one of the reasons why the prevention and eradication of corruption in Indonesia has not been maximized is because the analysis of the causes, impacts, and policies to prevent and eradicate corruption does not use an economic approach. Whereas the economic approach is very suitable to be applied considering that humans are economic creatures (Homo Economicus) who consider all their actions on the basis of profit and loss (benefit and cost analysis). With an economic approach, it is hoped that the prevention and eradication of corruption in Indonesia will be maximized.
