Globalization and international cooperation have long been important elements of the economic development of countries in the world, both developing and developed countries. The development is very dynamic, in addition to new market opportunities, on the other hand shows the unequal competition between developing and developing countries. Regardless of all that, international is a fact that cannot be avoided by every country, so its potential must be optimized for acceleration of economic development. Not only in the form of trading commodities, but also the flow of capital, human resources, technology and information.
Indonesia is a country that actively contributes in building international cooperation, both bilateral and multilateral. Various economic cooperation blocks were formed and followed to maximize regional economic potential. However, when viewed from international trade indicators, Indonesia has not fully utilized this international and cooperation potential. Indonesia’s partner countries and international trade destinations are still very limited. Only struggling with the United States, China, Japan and ASEAN. African and Middle Eastern countries have not been used optimally. UNIDO has even stated that since releasing a report on Indonesia’s industrial development in 2000. Of course this is a big challenge for Indonesia in the future.
One of the fundamental elements to unlocking international economic potential is diplomacy. Diplomacy is the spearhead of market penetration. Through diplomacy, information barriers can be opened, and the potential for cooperation between economic actors is built. Diplomacy’s important role in the economy has been widely studied and analyzed, especially from an institutional perspective. Institutional effectiveness and efficiency is a guarantee for the acceleration of economic development.
